Chapter 11

Greta

Hank had made his way to the area with the boats, and now he was attacking. These monsters weren’t messing around. They’d manage to throw everything into total chaos, and while Dana hadn’t turned into a zombie right away, both Ellis and Hank had.

Why?

Why had they turned so fast?

It had to have something to do with the way they’d been bitten. Hank was crawling, now, reaching for Winter. He’d left a bloody trail of guts and pus on the sand as he’d made his way to her. Reaching up, Hank grabbed Winter just as she reached the door to the boat, and I knew I had to try to get into that lifeboat. She wasn’t going to be able to with him fighting her. If Gemini was correct and there really were flares, we could use them to shoot Hank and Ellis. We’d be able to knock them dead before they ever knew what hit them.

We’d be able to destroy them.

“Hang tight, honey,” I called out as I darted past Winter. I had my knife in my hand. It was bloody from being in Dana’s skull, and I dropped it to the ground before I could accidentally hurt myself. I needed to get those flares.

If there really were flares or a flare gun in the boat, then that would be our saving grace, and I wasn’t going to waste any time.

The fight had started both slower and faster than I’d expected it to. We’d literally gone full circle around the island before any fighting at all had started. How strange was that? It was wildly strange to me, at least.

I was trying to learn as much about these zombies as I could because I knew that when we got off of this rock and headed back to the mainland – if we could find it – then eventually I’d be facing more of them. I’d be facing groups of them, probably, and I knew perfectly well that hand-to-hand combat was not my personal strength.

What was my strength?

Cleverness.

Quickness.

Being smart.

I could outsmart almost anyone I met. I might be old on the outside, but that just meant people could look at me and underestimate me. Very rarely did anyone look at me and think that I was a viable threat.

They just didn’t.

Instead, they looked at me and thought, “we could take advantage of her.”

People thought they could trick me.

Now, I had to try to do something I wasn’t very good at, though. I had to try to be swift. I had to be speedy and fast. I had to be quick. The sooner I got into the boat and got out the flares, the sooner we could be done with this battle.

Luke was still bemoaning his ankle. To be fair, it was going to hurt for a long-ass time. If he survived this, we’d help him bandage it, but I wasn’t a doctor and I didn’t think anyone else with me was, either. Even a doctor wasn’t going to be able to create a cast without plaster, and taking x-rays was completely out of the question.
